Veterans Day 2009

Post by MTSweger » Sun Oct 25, 2009 8:05 am

I plan to ride down to the WW II D-Day Memorial in Bedford on Wednesday, November 11th.

From the web site (http://www.dday.org):
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 @ 11:00AM
Veterans Day Ceremony

Did you know 1 out of every 13 Americans is a veteran? That America is a nation of over 23 million veterans? The National D-Day Memorial invites the public to honor those who have served our nation at our annual VETERANS DAY OBSERVANCE on Wednesday, November 11 at 11AM.

Admission to the Memorial will be free from 10AM until noon, but guests are reminded to bring a chair for the program. The program includes music, guest speakers, and recognition of all veterans.
Anybody else interested in a Veterans Day ride? If so, we can talk about it during our 1st (or 2nd) Sunday ride.

Since the weather in mid-November is anyone's guess, it might be best to not plan on riding the Parkway that day. Maybe meet at the McDonald's (Liberty gas station) in Lovingston around 9:00 and take US-29 down to Bedford. Or, we could just meet at the D-Day Memorial and ride some back roads after the ceremonies.

Let me know what you think.

A :::bump::: and reminder....

We will depart from the McDonalds in Lovingston at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, which should allow plenty of time to make it to the D-Day Memorial before the 11:00 ceremony begins. Then, assuming we leave Bedford by 1:00 p.m., we should be able to outpace the predicted afternoon showers coming up from the south. :twisted:

Suggested route: http://tinyurl.com/ybh8amf

For anyone coming from/through C'ville, big Chris and I are planning to meet at the corner of Hydraulic Rd and US-29 (at the Exxon station across from the 7-11) around 8:00. We'll stop in Lovingston to see if anyone else shows up.

Hope to see y'all on Veterans Day. I can think of no better way to honor all those who have served than to enjoy the freedom of riding a motorcycle across the beautiful Virginia countryside to witness a ceremony at the National D-Day Memorial. Veterans purchased our freedom one drop of blood at a time. During WW II, the tiny community of Bedford paid a higher price than most.

Given the latest forecast for steady rain, I'm going to wimp out.
