September First Sunday Breakfast and Ride

Post by Chuck » Mon Aug 28, 2006 10:50 am

We'll meet for breakfast at the Bosom Buddies Pancake Breakfast at the Sherando Lake Rally on Sunday, Sptember 3. Plan on a ride departing to the BRP.

Eat at 9:00 AM
Ride at ~10:00 AM

Sherando Lake Recreation Area is located on SR 814 south of Waynesboro. From I-64 Exit 96, go south on SR 924 to Lyndhurst, south on SR 664 to SR 814, south (straight) on SR 814 to Sherando Lake entrance (also accessible from the BRP). The rally is set up at the group camping area at the end of the road.

Looks like we should keep this as the annual September breakfast spot. The Bosom Buddies have expanded the menu well beyond pancakes -- eggs to order, sausage, biscuits, baked apples, doughnuts, pastries, OJ and coffee (and maybe more).

The usual suspects showed up for the ride, plus Larry and Wendy from Staunton and Ray from Baltimore. We headed south on the BRP and as seems to be our habit, began losing riders. Since the BRBs don't have any rules of our own, I suggest we steal some from the Twin Valley Riders to get a little more organization to our rides. Here they are:
http://twinvalleyriders.com/guidelines.shtml

Anyway, from the BRP we headed west on VA 56, through Steele's Tavern and Raphine to Brownsburg, south on VA 252, dodging cyclist, to VA 39 for a run to the overlook in Goshen Pass. From there we continued west, losing Butch and Harvey to a shorter route, for a gas stop in Marlington. The four of us remaing followed (now) WV 39 to the Highland Scenic Highway for a stop at the Black Mountain Overlook boardwalk and the spreading of Steve Coburn's West Virginia-bound ashes. Like the Steve Coburn Memmorial Ride ceremony on the BRP a few weeks ago, the weather was unusually cool for this time of year --65 degrees F (but it was at ~4500 ft. elevation). From there it was down the mountain on the HSH and US 219 to the single lane Back Mountain Road from Eldray to Cass where I departed toward home. The rest of the group stopped for lunch and planned to head west on WV 66 to US 219 and beyond. They may still be out there somewhere.
